Hofbrauhaus – New Smyrna Beach’s February Brewery of the Month

Before Hofbrauhaus of America was established in 2005, Hofbrauhaus has been a favorite beer of both royalty and peasants for more than 425 years. Wilhelm V, the Duke of Bavaria, had the first Hofbrauhaus brewery built due to his thirst for a good brew. Wilhelm’s son and heir, Maximilian I, had a different taste in beer than his father before him. He was less of a fan of the dark and heavy “Braunbier” – the most popular juice of the barley at that period and forbade all other private breweries to brew Weissbier, thus creating a monopoly for himself and his ducal brewery. That meant not only a handsome source of income for his court, but also 400 years of experience in Weissbier brewing for Hofbräu München, as the brewery is called today.

Fast forward to the year 1810 when King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria spared no expense when his son Ludwig married his beloved Theresa of Saxony-Hildburghausen, and held a massive party for 40,000 guests, dubbed the First Munich Beer Festival, and now known today as Oktoberfest. The royal brewers started to brew a beer specially for the festival with a deep golden colour, stronger original wort and higher alcoholic content – the world-famous “Oktoberfestbier” from Hofbräu München.

Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. Hofbrau Dunkel was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Hofbräu Hefe Weizen was Munich’s first Weissbier. Hofbräuhaus enjoyed this exclusive right for nearly 200 years, thus holding a monopoly on Weissbier in Bavaria. Hofbräu Oktoberfest is a rich, full-bodied beer which goes down ideally with traditional Bavarian cuisine. It is an absolutely natural product; brewed from pure water, the best quality malt and exquisite hops. By tradition, the first barrel of Hofbrau Maibock is tapped at the Hofbräuhaus in the last week of April, in time for the merry month of May. The success story of Munich’s oldest bock beer goes back as far as 1614. And let us not forget Hofbräu Original, which embodies Munich’s character as a city of beer, spreading its fame throughout the world.
